Keep Firewood Away From Your House

If you have a supply of firewood that you use to keep warm during the winter months, it’s crucial that you stack the wood at least 20 feet away from the side of your house. If the wood you use gets infested with termites, you may have a problem if it’s right next to your house’s foundation.

Improve Drainage and Reduce Moisture

Besides the cellulose found in wood, termites need water to survive. Therefore, make sure your downspouts are aimed away from your house and that A/C units and faucets are not dripping down its side.

Rake Mulch Away From Your Foundation

Mulch is a great way to keep gardens looking nice and healthy, but it also creates ideal conditions for termites. If you use mulch, rake it back at least four inches away from your house’s foundation. Also, don’t let any mulch come into contact with siding or door frames.

Clip Back Tree Limbs and Overgrown Bushes

Many pests, termites included, use foliage as a bridge to get into our homes. To prevent them from using your own plants against you, clip any tree branches that touch your house or hang over its roof and trim overgrown bushes that may brush against your mortar.

Have Your House Inspected for Termites Periodically

Finally, because you can never be too careful when it comes to termites, try to have your house thoroughly inspected by professionals at least once a year. If you do have termites in your house, your chances of avoiding massive amounts of structural damage are best if you spot the problem and take care of it as soon as possible.
