There’s a reason that ticks are considered one of nature’s hitchhikers. Attempting to stay out of sight, they often dwell in wooded or grassy areas. And, when the opportunity for a blood meal presents itself, they latch onto their unsuspecting host.
Now that the summer months are upon us, it’s important to get in the habit of tick checks—especially if you plan on going hiking, camping or simply relaxing in your yard. The same goes for your pets! Here are some of the most common places you’ll find ticks on yourself or your furry friends.
In Fur or Hair
When ticks latch onto you or your pet, they will burrow themselves into your skin or your pet’s fur. This is why it can be so hard to spot them. If you live in a heavily wooded area, take extra care to inspect yourself head to toe as well as your pet’s fur after spending time outdoors. These small arachnids are known for carrying Lyme disease, so the quicker you can detect and remove them, the better.
On Clothes
Ticks love to latch onto clothing. This is how they find their way into your home. After spending time outdoors, feel through your clothing to ensure that you haven’t brought a blood-sucking traveler with you.
On Skin
As they feed on you or your pet, ticks will eventually embed part of their head into your skin. For this reason, they can go unnoticed until you start to experience redness or swelling. Severe itching in a specific area is also a sign that a tick has made you into a meal.
